Thailand's Underwater Archipelago Paradise

Nine granite islands rising from the Andaman Sea form Thailand's premier diving destination—the Similans. Signature Dive Sites

Each island offers distinct experiences, though Richelieu Rock—technically outside the national park but included in most Similan itineraries—stands as the region's crown jewel. This horseshoe-shaped pinnacle, often swept by nutrient-rich currents, attracts everything from hunting tuna to, occasionally, whale sharks. Within the park boundaries, sites like West of Eden feature dramatic underwater canyons where soft corals thrive in the current. East of Eden provides perfect conditions for night dives, when hunting morays and colorful basket stars emerge.

Seasonal Diving Window

The park operates on a defined season running from mid-October through mid-May, closing during monsoon months to allow marine ecosystems to recover. Early season (October-November) often brings plankton-rich waters with slightly reduced visibility but increased large pelagic activity. Mid-season (December-March) typically offers the clearest water, with visibility extending beyond 30 meters on perfect days. Water temperatures remain comfortable at 26-29°C (79-84°F), with most divers comfortable in 3mm wetsuits.

Liveaboard Experience

While day trips reach the closer islands, the Similans are best explored via multi-day liveaboard vessels. These floating dive hotels range from budget to luxury, allowing guests to wake up directly over world-class dive sites. The typical schedule includes four daily dives—three daytime plus one night dive—maximizing underwater time while minimizing travel. Between dives, visitors can explore the islands' pristine beaches with their characteristic "sailing stone" formations or snorkel in protected bays.

Conservation Considerations

The Similans' protected status helps maintain their pristine condition, though challenges remain. The 2010 coral bleaching event impacted shallow reefs, though deeper areas remained largely unaffected. Today's visitors witness the impressive recovery underway. Marine park fees directly support conservation efforts, including mooring buoy maintenance that prevents anchor damage. Responsible operators brief divers about no-touch policies and proper buoyancy to minimize human impact on this delicate ecosystem.
